For those of you who are familiar with TV shows like ‘extreme makeover home edition’ or ‘sledgehammer’, you may think that our remodel will be much destruction without any thought or care about the existing materials. We are happy to say that since we are not in a hurry to finish this remodel project, we are going to adhere to the following values:
Re-use:
If the materials are in a good shape, but just dirty or painted-over, we will take the time to clean them or strip the paint and use them in the remodeled home. Great examples of this values are the old doors, the trim around the doors that are removed, the hardware, the old-growth wooden double hung windows.
Re-purpose
If the item is of no use to us in the remodeled home, but its materials can be re-purposed for something else, we will do so. For example; we have no use for the brick chimney. We will however use the bricks (after cleaning off the mortar) for a feature wall, somewhere else in the home.
Re-cycle
The house had three gas-powered space heaters (each of them extremely unsafe). We had to get rid of them and therefore we put them in the recycling section of our dumpster, knowing that AR&R would take care of recycling the metal that they were made off.
We are expecting our vendors and contractors to abide by these same values when they work on our project.
